Vivendi Layoffs
Posted by: Celios on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 08:22 PM

Yesterday, news hit the web that 350 people have been layed off from Vivendi Universal, parent company of Sierra. While we can't confirm who actually got the axe, we were able to get confirmation that work on Tribes: Vengeance is still proceding from Adam Kahn, head PR guy on Vengeance. No one from IGA got fired (as far as we know), and Chris "Thrax" Mahnken is still working. So the game is still on track.

Quote Straight from the Vengeance website:
"Tribes: Vengeance "Skinning" Competition Announced
June 17, 2004
Vivendi Universal Games, in cooperation with Internet community site Tribalwar.com, announced today a contest to create alternative "skins" for use within TribesŪ: Vengeance. The competition, which starts immediately, will end on July 9th when a panel of judges from Vivendi Universal Games, Irrational Games, and Tribalwar.com will select the best skin and award its creator a high-end graphics card from ATI Technologies and an in-game credit.
A skin is the two-dimensional texture that is placed over a three-dimensional character model to give it a unique look in a videogame. "

New T:V Movie Released
Posted by: Celios on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 05:27 AM

Bittah has released a new movie of them taking the Alpha for a spin last week. The movie is 4:42 long and you have the choice between downloading the 120 megabyte version or the re-packaged 40 megabyte Xvid version. There should be no significant loss in video quality. Enjoy!
Also, make sure you have the Xvid codec installed if you choose to download the 40 megabyte version.

Thrax Talks Closed Beta
Posted by: Celios on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 06:26 AM

Thrax went over the closed beta concept on TribalWar today to let everyone know what to expect and why:
"This is just a quick note to let everybody know what closed beta is all about, and what you can, and can't expect to see happen.
Closed beta is simply a small link from "no beta" to the "open beta". We're using it to iron out major issues, and get the game to the level of stability required before starting open beta. There are certain issues you simply don't want to try to fix while 50,000 people are bitching that they can't play. Closed beta will let us fix all of those early.
Closed beta will be very small. We've had over 10,000 people register for the beta so far, and there doesn't seem to be a slowdown in sight. We will have less than 250 total openings in the closed beta until the Tribal-Wars LAN in late July. Of those, I've already filled about 100, which leaves 150 for those of you who are still hoping to get in. With my current database, that gives you less than a 1.5% chance of being selected. By the end of the week I estimate that your chances will go down to well below 1%.
However, if you want to take part in the beta there is a way you can have a 100% chance of getting in. Go to your local EBGames, or GameStop and pre-order (Marweas did it at Software Etc for $5) and then register for the Tribal-Wars LAN. Bring your receipt and you'll get a beta CD and you'll be in. I highly suggest that you do this now, because once the T-Ws spots fill up you won't have any way to get into the beta.
Thanks for reading."

Authentication Servers Down Again
Posted by: Celios on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 07:59 PM

Yes, it's true. The Authentication servers have, once more, decided to take a vacation. In the meantime, (MA) has setup several LAN servers for everyone to play on.
To connect to (MA)'s Classic DT-enabled CTF server, simply pull down your console and type this in: connect("66.28.14.59:28143");
